Episode 254: 10k Steps a Day: Do You Really Need to Hit this Goal?

Share this:

“There is not a magical cutoff where 9,999 steps doesn’t count, and then 10,000 steps suddenly unlocks health benefits that weren’t there before.”

Let’s talk about the magic number we’re all told to chase: 10k steps a day. Fitness trackers, workplace wellness programs, and social media throw this number at us like it’s an unbreakable code for health, but is it really backed by science or just rooted in marketing hype? On this episode, I dig into where this number truly came from, what the research actually shows, and how you can approach movement in a way that genuinely supports your health and lifestyle.

You might be surprised to learn that the origin of 10k steps a day has nothing to do with scientific data. In fact, it all started as a marketing gimmick! We’ll break down the real research, which tells a much more flexible (and liberating!) story. The truth? Most health benefits kick in well before you hit the 10,000 step mark, and chasing arbitrary numbers every single day might not be necessary, or helpful.

I share my own relationship with movement and steps, as well as why my fitness doesn’t revolve around step counts, and why yours doesn’t have to either. I want you to move in a way that works for YOU, not a number someone made up. This episode gives you the information and reassurance you need to release unrealistic expectations, see the bigger picture, and make movement feel positive and supportive in your life.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Where the 10k steps a day recommendation actually comes from
  • What the research REALLY says about step counts and the point where health benefits level off
  • The range of steps that are associated with reduced health risks
  • How movement can ebb and flow, and why flexibility is healthier than rigid targets
  • Why step counts don’t measure all types of movement and how to approach exercise in a way that feels good to you
  • How to reframe your relationship with movement so it supports your body, your life, and your mental health

There’s nothing wrong with walking more or aiming for 10,000 steps if that feels good for you. But, you don’t have to chase an arbitrary number to be healthy. I hope this episode helps you give yourself grace, explore what movement feels best for your unique life, and leave the step-count guilt behind.
